First of all, the archetypes-general group/list is the right place to ask these kinds of questions. Secondly, it depends on the storage. The default storage is AttributeStorage, which means you get an attribute on the object with the same name as the field. The ZODB makes sure this is all persisted properly. Of course AttributeStorage isn't always the best, and something like AnnotationStorage is probably better in many cases.
