usually you would only need the fill-slot stuff - in a portlet 
(http://plone.org/development/teams/ui/p2uicookbook/NakedPortlets) you'd 
put that fill slot tag in side the '<div metal:define-macro="portlet">' tag.

but i don't know what exact code snipped you used but maybe this helps:
