plone tableless layout?

hi,
after quite a long time dealing with plone i am still wondering what the
tableless layout is exactly good for? Acutally i read that it lets you
modify the layout to a higher degree by just changing the stylesheets
without touching the templates...can anyone give me a more detailed idea
about this? What else does the tableless layout allow you to do?
