news items in separate folders to display in columns on home page

I have two customized news.pt files which pull news items from their
respective department folders. This works fine when I use the test tab in
the ZMI to view the news items per department.

General Goal: I want to combine both customized news.pt pages into a table
on the front page of my site. In effect I will be showing the news from
each department in a column on the main page.

Q? How do I get this third zpt page which contains the table to display
the news from the two department news items zpt pages? And secondly, how
do I get the main page to display this?

Any help or suggestions to this or a better approach would be appreciated.
