We have ideas for a 'standard' set of generated classes to mark elements that denote content types (icons as images are slated for removal through the 2.x series and not before time). An advantage of this is that content types can be represented using (for example) text colour. The navigation portlet itself is something in development by tesdal. It should (will) be accessible, flexible and semantic.
