Do you remember plone.net? The reasoning to integrate it into
plone.org went along the same lines.

I agree that SEO is important and therefore agree that keeping it
under one domain is beneficial. Right now when I google (in stealth
mode) for 'open source cms' plone appears at number 8, if I google for
'free cms' It does not feature on the first page.

 +1 plone.org should be a one stop shop for this 'subactivities' also
this avoids going the way of old.zope.org and if you look at
plonegov.org you see that this site is not the best showcase for
plone.
