FileStorageError when upgrading Plone 4.0.9 -> 4.3.2-pending

I get the following error when upgrading a 4.0.9 site to 4.3.2-pending.

Oddly enough, upgrading first from 4.0.9 to 4.3.1 works, then 4.3.1 to 
4.3.2-pending also works without a hitch?

Looks like maybe the upgrade transaction message becomes too long?
