I suspect that making such a change would be harmless, see: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.web.zope.plone.devel/32790 For DX-.DX relations, use portal_catalog UID index for back-refs query. For AT->DX relations, use referenceable behavior. IMHO, whether or not you choose to do the latter should not ideally affect whether the item is indexed in uid_catalog (I think everything that can have a UID should be indexed in it, until it is removed from Plone).
