I agree that that its confusing that we have news images as a special field which doesn't work the same way as other images. One thing that would be nice with the folderish content is to remove the special image field on news and replace it with a way to make an normal image (contained in that item) as the headline image. The same technique could be used so that any page could have an nominated headline image that gets used in listing that have preview images. I'm not really sure how this would work yet however. Maybe a reference field on all content to pick the image?
If we do this then news items don't need to be a special news content type. We could use some other kind of marker to indicate its news such as a marker interface. The advantage of that is you can turn a page into news or news into a page.
