For what it's worth: My work on PAU/PAS resulted in
pas.plugins.ldap. While I don't know how many are actually using it, it
is stable and I know of people using it in production.

I would not have been able to succeed that deep in the core, without
jensens and rnix, who were already deep in there.

And yes, for me GSOC2008 was the kick-off.
