What about this project attracts you?

I would start by getting a working build of Plone and then working on a 
bug, such as:

* https://dev.plone.org/ticket/13676
or
* https://dev.plone.org/ticket/13806

are probably good starting positions. You'd need to check they're still 
broken, then work out a fix.

That should get you through the process of setting up a 
development/build environment ready to make changes.
