There are actually a few variations you can experiment with. To get a horizontal bar change the 'navbar-fixed-left' class to 'navbar-fixed-top' on the #edit-zone div. To get text along with the icons, add the 'expanded' class. I think using a bar on the left was motivated by wanting to work for portrait-oriented small-screen devices.
