Ramon and I explored an idea where we can intercept the ususual
metal:fill-slot calls by tweaking the new main template browser view in
Plone5. It appears to be feasible to move to a tiles/block based grid
layout in which #content-core (or #main) is just another block that can
be placed in a grid layout, and to do so without necessarily updating
all existing metal calls, by re-routing such assignments to a block.

I'm really keen to move away from the ancient 3-col hardcoded Plone
layout and enable a responsive grid for everything, including #main. Yet
keep backward compatibility with add-ons that assume that the world
still looks like it used to.

Yes. Methinks the grid model should be sufficiently simple that it
should even be feasible to plug in a grid system of choice. In the end a
grid is mostly just a convention to use a set of css classes.

We're exploring these issues in multiple discussions at PLOG. The
challenge is to come up with a solution that provides (sufficient)
backward compatibility, especially with the portlets machinery, without
increasing the level of complexitiy even further.
