I think you'd have multiple "layout templates" (static placeholders) 
from which the "layout engine" would choose the most appropriate.

Yes, we can probably use some well known code design patterns as well, 
e.g. a combination of Mediator and Strategy.

The Netsight team participating in the sprint includes Lewis, a UX 
designer who's been spending a lot of time exploring this problem space 
recently. That'll probably help a lot to move us along.
