True.

But it is possible to get the data out. And github being popular, many people
write integrations, such as https://waffle.io/
"a full project management solution from your existing GitHub Issues" (looks
like a Trello-ish view of issues).
Also not free software, but free for public repos.

Another interesting one is Simple Defects: http://syncwith.us/sd/
"SD is a peer-to-peer bug tracker that’s built for sharing and use both online
and offline. With SD, you can sync your bugs back and forth between other
instances of SD, and even between SD and other bug trackers that SD supports."
.. which also supports github issues. It should be usable as a route to
backup issues even if not used as tracker.

But we can use it while making alternatives evolve, and (carefully) without
getting locked in.

Meantime however we can benefit from all the integrations other people
are building on github.

rhodecode is like gitlab (self-hosted github-alike), right?
I wonder if github integrations are transferable to rhodecode or gitlab (i.e.
if they implement the same API).

Very necessary and your points carry a lot of weight, it's concerns I also
share. I've asked at https://github.com/contact before why issues aren't
distributed along with code and got a "we're thinking about it" response (long
ago already). I'm presenting counter arguments to see if they get knocked down;
e.g. perhaps the simple-defects issue syncing is lossy or bitrotten. Or
perhaps other people know of much better github issue sync projects.
