I don't want to add more fire to the discussion but as I was one of the
guys who pushed for that here is my opinion.

When we were doing toolbar UX/UI we decided default left toolbar for this
reasons :

* Most wide screens are used , so more usage of the browser space
* On mobile the actual implementation ( a bit buggy but it should be easy
to solve ) needs to be vertical also so for using the same order and make
it easy to find options was good to maintain the vertical toolbar on desktop
* I personally was also thinking on extensions of the toolbar ( like the
mosaic editor idea ) that needed to have a second level toolbar, in that
case using a horitzontal toolbar was a good idea so we could offer both
toolbars without invading the content space too much.
* At that time we also were thinking on plone.org as a possible theme
example, there (and on a lot of themes as I've seen) there is a top
toolbar, so we were doing some UI tests where two top toolbars where shown
and the results where really nasty and not usable.

It was more than one year ago, talking with rok about it that would be
great to have this option, the experience of other cms systems using
vertical bar and the reasons I pointed out made us decide to offer a
toolbar that has left vertical default behavior, with the option to put on
top.

On the other hand, we now have three production big plone 5 sites ( and
some small ) and the users have never complained about it, most of them
that moved from plone 4 are happier to see all the options together on the
left, some ideas like showing byline on the content area is a matter of
skinning depending on the site.

Just wanna point out that the mockup and implementation of this subject was
done nearly one year ago :

Looking forward to see all you at Arnhem!
