We are not running our own mail server because 1) We had 12k free with mandrill and based on my back of the envelope calculations I thought that would be plenty. :-P 2) It was recommended as the best solution when setting up Discourse and 3) I didn't want to run a mail server. This isn't costing us a lot of money, 1 USD per 5K emails or something like that, with the first 12k per month free. But we will look into other solutions, but it isn't very high on my list right now. It is a lot more economical for me to pay for it out of pocket then fixing it, and the book keeping related to this probably cost a lot more then the actual service. There seem to have been a big spike in emails when upgrading Discourse to the latest version, and this might make this month a bit different, and based on the average so far this month we will be sending about 20k emails per month.
