sorry … hm, though I’ve been a subscriber to the list for years, it said, I could not post but should subscribe first, which I did now. Sorry, if this mails comes to you for a second time (at least I myself did not get it back via the list.)

Original message:

Hi,

I have a suggestion for a project: I very much like the idea behind ftw.book by 4teamwork from Berne, Switzerland: It provides a Plone class "book“ that creates a LaTeX-output for a printable PDF. At the moment, it is functioning but rather as some kind of „proof of concept“ with the basic functionalities. It would be great to extend that and offer – via the plone web interface – some more of the options from the LaTeX „universe“. They themselves are to busy with other projects so they cannot develop it further at the moment. But I guess it should be easy, based on ftw.book, to develop. e.g., other classes like article and proceedings with some options for type face, paper size etc.

This could not only bring a simple version of LaTeX to the people via the web, but also allow to create online repositories for publications.

As far as I know there is no such (free) solution available, and even large publishing houses still use for their publishing process the old-fashioned system where the author reads some 100 pages of Word or PDF document describing the required style of the text, sends the word file to the editor who sends it to the layouter (with some bounces forth and back between these three) … until it finally is „finished“ with InDesign or something alike and then sent to the press.

What do you think?

PS: A good reason to have something like an „extended“ version of ftw.book is Vint Cerf’s warning from last year: „If you have photographs (or any other documents - my additional interpretation) you really care about: Print them out!“

Best regards

I think after updating the list we can discuss the project idea and start working on them :)
