I have never used api.plone.org, always seemed to confuse me more in  
the past. There are a couple of tools that I use locally:

  * ack (or grep) to find things on the filesystem or in TextMate with  
ack/grep in project
  * collective.recipe.omelette to get all the latest packages in one  
place
  * DocFinderTab to see how the inheritance structure goes via the ZMI
