Don't be. Plone gives you CMF *plus* tonns of features, so using vanilla CMF 
aint gonna make it simplier for you. 

Judging from email adress you're located in Canada, we are too :)
We modified plone to be not-so-community-portalish looking ( http://
cms.athabascau.ca/frontpage2 ) and we've got some expertise in that. We are 
ready to release all the in-house documentation if somebody's interested.

IT's not correct. For plone it doesn't matter how many contributors you have - 
final product still is a public website with some restricted areas, isn'tthat 
what you need? 
And you're not right about rework - in our case we did about 15 templates/css 
to change completely plone site (which is not that much, really)

"You're deeply mistaken" (c) some show. We are using uPortal as a portal and 
Plone as CMS and we're happy. That means - you're not forced to do portal 
from your site - it's just an option.
