It is specifically focused on hosting Departments, Courses, and Course Content for universities, and has a healthy international http://cosl.usu.edu/projects/educommons/adopters adoption . While it may not meet your needs out-of-the-box, it would provide you a good example of the content types you are wanting to generate.
