oh right.  muhahahahaha!
basically this does not *fix* the problem.  but it makes the site more 
tolerant
if you remove the cookie_authentication, i.e. it does not break 
completely.
There are some new i18n tags.  some i18n people might want to look at 
this.

It has been checked in.
