Steve, thanks for trying this out.

It turned out that the build process somehow picked up the system package
liblzma-dev (version 4.999.9beta+20091116-1) which I had installed earlier
when building Python.

After having done "aptitude remove liblzma-dev" everything worked fine.
Maybe something for "README.txt"?
