Hi,

ok as promised :)

Windows
======

We do not have a up to date installer for windows since quite some time
now, mainly because we lack time and enough knowledge to do it properly
for recent versions of Plone and Windows.
During the conference in Bristol [2014] and also during PLOG2014 we had
some discussions how tackle this and do people really need/want a
installer for Windows anymore.

We reached to the conclusion that, we will ask this the community since
this is a huge issue. So during PLOG we asked this and we got the answer
that it is still important to have a installer for M$.

How to proceed ?
--------------------------

If we go for a Windows installer, we also want to have a professional
and proper one, since we really lack time and knowledge, we got the OK
during PLOG to reach out to companies who do Windows installer as
business to get an estimate how much it would cost to create one for
Plone, if we know how much it will be, we will get back to the community
to decide on how to go from here.

The idea is to have something what we easily can upgrade to a new
[minor] version by ourself, further should come the installer with
beautiful docs and so on and so on.

Question:

- which M$ versions should be supported ?
- who will try to get in touch with some companies who are doing such
things ?

OSX
===

As you may know we have/had a installer for OSX and we also started to
do a up to date rewrite last year [its on github], we got the rewrite
working but we also found out that it is quite hard to make a proper
installer for OSX which is less opinionated, in terms of how you install
dependencies [homebrew vs macports vs nix and so on].
One other painful point is OSX itself or the way Apple keeps changing stuff.

So yeah we had some discussions about that and we came to the following
conclusion:

We have basically three target groups on OSX:

- developer
- designer
- people who want to try Plone

For developer we do not need a OSX installer, developer run buildout,
they know it.

For designer: we will create vagrant boxes with the main directory
mounted, so they can use photoshop and other tools.

People who want to try Plone: we will create virtualbox images, which
they can import and we will promote more that there are some demo sites
online.

This together with good and updated docs should work.

What we do with people who still running osx as server to use Plone ?

Well, good docs, in the end the OSX installer is like the
Uinified-Installer, just a wrapper, good docs should cover this.

That is the state to my knowledge, I will update the vagrant and
virtualbox setup the next days for Plone 5 beta.

Questions would is be ok to upload them to dost.plone.org/$SOMETING ?
with that we could also announce them on vagrantcloud and people just
could do : vagrant import plone5b1 [example].

Docker
====

Some of you may ask what is with docker ?

Right, we are working on that, too. We have still some open issues on
how to do that in a way that is follows best practices of docker and
plone, which is possible but we need decisions, if my talk will be
accepted I also will give a talk about during PloneConf 2015.
You mask ask what is so hard in creating a docker image ?
Nothing at all, but to do it right is the interesting part, because
there is not really a doing it right, but IMHO most of the stuff I
see/saw online about docker and plone, is just wrong !, way too big
images, way too slow, horrible with caching, build time, testing and so
on ...

Cheers,
