We've never had the policy of auto-updating existing instances.

Remember, many Mac clients use Plone in production environments.  To 
upgrade their instance without them doing any kind of testing would 
be problematic for many.

Most production environments would make a copy of their production 
instance, perform an upgrade on that instance, test it out, and if 
all is well upgrade their production instance.... or if it does not 
go well in the test instance, figure out what issues need to be 
resolved, fix the issues, then push.
