Not to rain on your parade.  But this is quite painful to do.
First ESI works with Squid 3.  And secondly I've heard
ESI does not work as advertised in the Real World.

I would highly suggest *against* this.  This is the sort
of configuration information that needs to be explained
to people.  Point-and-shoot caching does not exist.
It requires the person who is configuring caching
to understand WTF is happening.

I believe such an attempt would be quite doomed.
OOTB == lay people.  Lay people would not grok
the details of caching.
