The basic problem here was that the Unified Installer lacked the egg for the OS X graphical controller. That was a special OS X add on which the installer activated (on installation) for OS X 10.5 and 10.6. So, the lack wouldn't show up on anything except a 10.5 or 10.6 machine. With 10.8 on the horizon, 10.6 will be out-of-date two releases, and I don't see any point in having the Unified Installer include a special graphical controller for an out-of-date OS. So, unless someone screams loudly, I'm going to solve this problem for our 4.2+ by removing the OS X graphical controller from the Unified Installer kit. It will still install on OS X 10.5 and 10.6, but without the graphical controller. Steve (who is still bitter with apple for it's dropping wxPython without notice).
