Hi,
I don't think it is linked to LinguaPlone
If I just customize - footer.pt by removing a line :

<acronym title="Copyright" i18n:name="copyright"
i18n:attributes="title title_copyright;">©</acronym>
I get the problem when I switch the site language from English to French

in the footer.pt I noticed that are used ® © which are not
XML complient
