The shortname is (usually) determined based on the title. You could use the same logic to determine the search term from the title. The vocabulary terms may even support this directly: At least the Zope-Toolkit vocabularies (not sure about "ATVocabularyManager") distinquish between "value" (the "shortname" equivalent - used internally to identify the term) - and "title" (used for display to humans).
