Your response put me in the right direction.  I implemented this which 
does what I wanted:

        <field name="squad" type="plone.app.relationfield.RelationList">
             <title>Squad</title>
             <value_type type="plone.app.relationfield.Relation"
form:widget="plone.formwidget.autocomplete.AutocompleteMultiFieldWidget">
                 <title>Related</title>
<source>myswimmingclub.content.squad_path_src_binder</source>
             </value_type>
             <required>False</required>
         </field>
