Browse DateIndex in portal catlog gives DateError: Invalid date

I have a catalog query which is querying a DateIndex field, but the contents are coming back in what looks like the folder sort order, rather than the custom DateIndex.

When I try to Browse that index in the portal_catalog, I get this error.

I tried a reindex, but the error persists.  Any ideas what’s happening here and how to remedy?
