I think it's an excellent issue to raise. Couple of corrections: A Plone.org login is not required to subscribe to our mailing lists. Only a mailman subscription or (preferred) a Nabble account. Yes, this is somewhat redundant. If there is someone who wants to tackle adapting Listen to Plone.org, we have a Plone.org buildout that you can check out and start hacking. I'd expect the big challenge would be migrate the mailing list archives.
