i did the same procedure on centos 5. i had almost exactly the same  
problems as on macosx:

same problems (and unprofessional solution)

same problems

same problems. but the "zope" user does not exist on a standard  
system; this should be created before setting the permissions.

i did not realize that the login/password of the inituser of zope is  
set in base.cfg so please forget this comment.

when the jpeg libs are installed they are picked up by pil without  
problems.
