We would like to use adapters, too actually.

But we decided against Five for the time being. It's just too much to 
set up for most users. So we stick with this portal_type mapping and 
wait for Zope 2.8.

But it's all Zope. We probably should make a plain Zope product for the 
base part and have the application specifics in a Silva/CMF/Plone 
product.

Well, to some extend it does. You'll at least know if requests go 
through the proxy/firewall/whatever. Even though if they don't the 
notifications won't either.
