Ah, but there is of course a real problem here. We need E-mail addresses. 
How can I ensure that the username is an email address, or how do you want 
to provide that info?

Yes, there would be several hooks necessary to do that. However it is not 
impossible. Dario, if you can specify your situation a little bit better, 
we might be able to help.
