SystemError: new style getargs format but argument is not a tuple

I am attempting to boot a Zope/DirStorage installation restored from
backup.  The start script runs fine to the point of mounting the
database, but things go downhill from here.  I am not certain that this
is a DirStorage question, but it looks suspiciously so...  Everything
seems to trace back to the _set_ghost_state method in
ZODB/Connection.py.  Below is a sample of the sort of output that
appears.  Am I doomed or is there some obvious solution here?
