We do something similar, and you can also add in a command that will be 
automatically run when that key is presented to the server, so we run 
rsync directly from there with various options.  We can present 
different keys to the server to get different commands.  This allows us 
to connect as root and authenticate via keys, but not allow actual 
logins as root.
