You dont mention which version of DirectoryStorage you are using, but Im sure 
it is one which predates support for python 2.4.x. Try the latest.

(Does Zope 2.7 support python 2.4.2? Im not sure, but I believe not. Anyway, 
using an earlier Python would fix this assertion problem too)
