we tried many things and failed miserably; I have spoken with David Glick to check if we can fix this directly in the ZCatalog code by tracking down the object (by logging an error) and creating an empty blob to "fix" the issue. we think this is sane and will make life easier for people like us, who may have encountered this issue over the years.
