I talked with Jim about it September 2019. Here's what he guessed at: "OK. 
This isn't a case of violating persistence rules.  The problem arises from 
the fact that dataclass uses a metaclass.  This is probably sumountable and 
perhaps worth surmounting, as dataclasses seem to be popular. "
