On my laptop I even found old remnants of a twm.desktop file.
Installing ctwm didn't also install a ctwm.desktop, so you would have to
create it yourself in /usr/share/xsessions. The example only starts ctwm
and nothing else; you probably have a .xessionrc or .xinitrc script to
set up your session, and you can put that in place of Exec= if you want.

If you build ctwm yourself (the one from Ubuntu is 3.7.1 so rather old)
you don't even have to overwrite the packaged one; you can just put it
in $HOME/bin, and if either the .desktop file or the .xsessionrc file
refers to it, it should be used.

Oh, I almost forget: you can choose the "desktop session" from the login
screen. The username box has a thingie that brings up a menu (I'm not
sure if I kept the default desktop manager, but the place to click isn't
obvious if you don't suspect that the feature exists) which lists the
options from /usr/share/xsessions and a few more.
