Peter,

Could you use nmtui, the networkmanager text user interface? You just 
run it in a terminal and it does everything that network manager does to 
control the networks, either wired or wireless. It allows to enter 
passwords if needed. Once networkmanager is setup using an other window 
manager, its settings for the network will keep when you switch to e. At 
least it does with me using both e and XFCE on ubuntu. I have never used 
connman.
