startup is called when something like this: session.screen0.rootCommand: source ~/.fluxbox/startup is in your .fluxbox/init file. To test if startup is being called, add something like the following to startup: echo "`date`: Startup is being called by $0" >> ~/startup.log If startup IS being called, it should work.
