It's really fluxbox doing the wrong thing (but it has always done it). 
I've long wanted to fix this issue.

  - Windows define certain valid size increments for themselves
  - When tabbed together, all the windows get the same size as the main
    one.
  - If non-main ones have increments, they are not honoured.

The solution, which I've wanted to do for a while, but have never got 
around to, is to allow for some space around windows that don't quite fit 
in the current window, so that the window itself is the right size, but 
some padding will be visible.

I doubt that this is the same problem affecting the Matlab/Ansys windows, 
but the effects are probably related (clashes between when the client 
moves/resizes itself in response to events, and what fluxbox does).
