I happen to be the "crazy fool" who displayed that "f****** message"
and the reason I chose to mail the list was precisely because I HAD
read the NEWS, README, the ChangeLog and man fluxstyle and there was
no mention of the option that resolved the problem that I originally
posted (see the archives, a solution was provided by another
subscriber).  I have just downloaded the current version and checked
the README and ChangeLog, and there is no mention of the 'pixmap'
option to the 'background:' style in any of them as far as I can tell.
 For the sake of brevity...

     Using fbsetroot to set background.  (Henrik)
   * Added 'random' and 'aspect' options to background theme
      background: <texture option>
      background.pixmap: <image filename>
      background.color: <color>
      background.colorTo: <color>

This is why I could not find an answer to my original problem and
hence the original post (perhaps the one source I didn't check was the
forums).  If I've missed something then please let me know where it is
so that I can use this resource in the future.

This is NOT a criticsim of the authors of fluxbox, since I think they
do a wonderful job maintaining an excellent window manager, and the
documentation has bulked out dramatically since I first started using
fluxbox.

Your email was, in my opinion, completely unecessary.  I'm not
offended by the notion that you think I'm a 'crazy fool' (I've never
met you and am highly unlikely to, and therefore care not for what you
think of me), but you made an erroneous assumption that I had not gone
through the standard procedure of checking the relevant documentation,
and that was just plain wrong.  I migrated to Linux as a consequence
of my work (software for statistical genetics was originally written
for *NIX systems), and have taught myself how to administer systems
through the exact process you have accused me of not following.
