As something to offer, try setting your font to: -*-fixed-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* If this works, and "fixed" (or "sans" or "monospace") don't, then there's something odd in your Xft fonts. I'd be curious what operating system and X version you're running.
