Background Vertical Gradient now banding under rc2

Hi.
I've just installed rc2 over rc1 and my once smooth vertical gradient is now a 
horrible pile of bands. I've tried to set the background colour from the init 
file with 
	fbsetroot -gradient Vertical -from black -to blue
and also 
	background: gradient Vertical
	background.color:  black
	background.colorTo:  blue
	in the style file.
Is there some other setting needed?
I'm running Suse 10 on a Dell Latitude C600 XSGA

Can anyone help?
