That works... but I think what the OP is looking for is an answer to the
problem and not a work-around, although I may be wrong.  I can't
explain why occasionally you get a decoration-less window, but at least
in 1.0rc2 (you didn't mention what you were running or I missed it)
there is a command you can bind to a key to remove or add <toggle> the
decorations.  Maybe if you use this, you could just toggle them back on
and do things the way you're used to ... this should work, unless the
window that you are seeing is somehow DESIGNED to have no decorations,
or to somehow bypass the window manager entirely.  I don't know enough
to do more than speculate on that :)

The command is "toggledecor," and below you'll see I have it assigned
to windows-key-t in my keys file.

Mod4 t :toggledecor

And yes, there's no trailing "e" on the end of "decor."  

I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but I do hope that
