Setting font sizes *within* application GUIs on FB-1.0

Folks,

I'm running Fluxbox 1.0 on Xubuntu Gutsy (beta), and I'm trying to
figure out how to shrink the fonts *within* an application's gui. (Not
the windows themselves, which use FB's themes.) If I use Xbuntu, Xfce
has a set of user-interface settings in which font changes affect the
GUIs. But those settings don't hold up when I use Fluxbox. I've tried
setting up an .Xdefaults file in my user directory containing Xft.dpi:
70. But that doesn't yield any changes. I use Xubuntu's GDM as a log-in
screen, so I wonder if I have to ditch that and log in with startx
and .xinitrc from a command-line in order for .Xdefaults to carry the
day. Any guidance?
