Just to chime in, as the poster in that link you mention. I'm no longer a happy fluxboxer. I have one machine still running it and I'm voting with my bandwidth when I rebuild that machine. I think a mouse focus delay would help, or having all windows maximize against the panel, such that if there's a gap put it at the top where it's less likely for me mouse to go - then again, there's always menus, so that's not so good either.
